CULTSTUD-L  began life in January 1996 as an online discussion list for a cultural studies graduate seminar offered by the Department of Communication at the University of South Florida. When the course ended, there was enough interest in continuing the list to merit opening it up to a broader group of participants. Today, CULTSTUD-L has more than 1700 subscribers from over 40 different countries.
